How To Make The Most Creative DIY M&M Halloween Costume

As a fan of M&M candy from the Mars company, I found joy in brainstorming and creating a unique DIY M&M Halloween costume.

After my last post on 39 Halloween costumes for families, many people asked me how I achieved this look, and I happily created this post.

Inspired by the company’s rich 100+ year history and the inventor Forrest E. Mars Sr., I created a costume that stood out from the thousands of ideas I saw online (mms.com).

The best thing about this costume is you can make it yourself with a few items and body paint!

I have a sweet tooth for Mars candy like no one else, and I enjoyed how comfortable this costume was and the creativity behind its creation.

One For All and All for Fun! ~M&M’s Famous Quote

I enjoy the ‘one for all and all for fun’ theme, a key part of M&M’s brand identity and often featured on its website and marketing materials.

M&M World is located in the Millennial Mall in Orlando, Florida, where I live. Lucky me!

I’ve been there several times with family and decided to maximize my creativity with all the M&M things I saw.

The variety of chocolate candies and M&Ms was overwhelming.

According to Google, it’s amazing how this family business has grown into a $117 billion company!

None of that was obtained overnight and it’s heartwarming to know it’s a family company.

Interestingly, the first three letters of my name from Marlenny also match the inventor’s last name, Mars.

I used to call myself the Mars chocolate queen since my favorite candy is yellow packet peanuts M&Ms.

Now, back to the fun stuff!

Choosing Your M&M Color for Your Halloween Costume

When selecting your M&M color, you can choose any of the colored dresses or shirts that you have.

I chose a beautiful brown dress with gorgeous beaded white patterns.

When selecting an outfit, choose one that is your preferred color. I love the green M&M, but I chose a brown dress to make the Halloween multicolored.

The New York Post has excellent information on the meaning behind M&M’s colors, which you must check out!

I found the article entertaining because I learned that Anthony’s and my favorite color, neon green, is anthropomorphic due to its natural beauty beyond description.

This concept is central to the M&M brand and its use of vibrant colors.

I realized that the color green could mean so much, haha. I also love the description of the yellow M&Ms because they are the original with the peanut.

Gathering Materials for M&M Halloween Costume

It’s time to gather and prepare your materials!

Materials:

  1. One brown dress or garment of your choice
  2. Beads
  3. Body paint or fabric paint (I only had body paint at the time)
  4. A sewing needle and thread
  5. Scissors
  6. Yellow Sandals or any color you’d like!

Step 1:

To recreate this, look. I chose a beautiful brown dress adorned with tiny white, silver-colored beads.

Step 2:

Please cut the dress to the desired length, matching your height. I’m 103 pounds and 5’4 “but very leggy Sue, so it looks tiny but fits perfectly.

Step 3:

Threading colorful beads into a costume

To achieve a candy-like effect, attach beads of different colors to the bottom and middle of the dress by sewing them on with thread and needle.

Also, sew these beads under the breastplate so the candies dangle where the white beaded design is.

Step 4:

Use body paint to create a beautiful M&M pattern on your costume. I used my fingers to do this, and it was a fun time!

Step 5:

Start dotting your skin with neon body paint and allow it to dry before using white body paint to create little m’s in some of the colorful dots.

(Tip: use an eyeliner pen or thin brush to achieve the perfect m’s. Wash the black tint off, dry it, and dip it in white body paint).

Paint your lips with neon lipstick or dot your lips with colorful dots. I used the body paint and did not suffer allergic reactions. The colors lasted all night!

I use this specific body paint:

Step 6:

Style your hair to resemble M&M’s, or wear an M&M hat. If you have long hair rock it! If you have short hair own it! I pulled off the Halle Berry look boldy in my twenties.

You can wear your hair long or sport a wild, colorful rainbow wig to make the look pop.

Step 7:

Put on the costume and sandals and head out for an unforgettable night.

I felt comfortable the entire night with the body paint on my skin.

I recommend choosing comfortable material, especially if you’ll be walking around trick-or-treating with kids or dancing at a party.

All done!

You can make this M&M costume unique by using various items to make it look your own.

You can use glitter, sequins, and even small lights to bring your design to life.

I sported a DIY bead bracelet to make it look like I had M&M’s on my wrist.

Some people go the extra mile and customize their costumes using cardboard, fabric, paint markers, and glue fasteners.

The endless possibilities allow you to achieve the look you desire!

Adding Color and Details to Your Halloween Costume

I decided to paint my dress and whole body with body paint because it’s safe to use on the skin.

I know that body paint stains clothes, so use something you don’t mind staining.

The colors really stood out when using the body paint because they were bright and hypnotizing, similar to those in M&M candies.

You can add the M&M logo and other details, such as a white belt, buttons, and gloves.

For my costume, I kept my nails painted in all the neon colors of the M&M candy and put an m on each nail.

Creating Accessories for M&M Halloween Costume

Some people enjoy wearing hats. An M&M hat would be an excellent accessory for this look, and you can create a new style.

You can coordinate your costume with your hat to avoid showing your hair if you’d like.

However, I chose to sport short curls for this look. My hair resembled chocolate candy pieces in swirls similar to Hershey’s kisses.

Tips for Comfort and Mobility

Since you must parade around in this costume, comfort and mobility are necessary.

Make sure you stretch a few times to test your Halloween costume out.

Try touching your toes to ensure your costume is free of rips, tears, or mishaps before you head out the door on Halloween night, to the party, or for trick-or-treating.

For my costume, comfort and mobility were key. I was able to move around quickly and remain comfortable throughout the night.

I wore yellow sandals to represent the yellow M&Ms and was very comfortable the whole night.

Additional M&M Halloween Costume Ideas

Many M&M costume ideas, such as dressing up as a group of M&Ms, can be tried with friends or family members.

You can also consider being a giant M&M or a popular mischievous M&M.

You can find inspiration on Pinterest and incorporate Halloween themes or characters into an M&M costume.

I’m intrigued by this because I’ve never tried it before, but I know people love blending custom ideas, and it turns out well.
